The cardinal rule of close protection was—don’t get personally involved with the person you are protecting. It was a rule for a reason. Pierce was continually distracted, his gaze turning constantly to Riley sitting beside him. It was all him, too. She definitely wasn’t trolling for his attention. In fact, she was going over her presentation to make sure it was perfect.

He found it so hard to keep his eyes off her. As a man, he was fascinated. As an operator, he was appalled at his behavior. She was here, in an armored vehicle and he was at the wheel. Inside the car there was no danger to her. Zero. Zilch. All the danger would come from outside the vehicle, which is where his attention should be. Instead of stealing glances at her every ten seconds.

He had to unfuck his head, STAT.

He shouldn’t be even thinking that word, because it reminded him of this morning, in bed. Of sliding into her hot tightness. He moved uneasily in his seat. Jesus, he hadn’t had sex in what? Six months? They’d been really busy and he hadn’t missed it and his dick had just stayed down. And now, it wanted up, it wanted to be in Riley Robinson. And it wanted more of that, lots more. It wanted Riley.

Who was staring into the monitor of her magic laptop.

“Who are we seeing this morning?” Riley asked the question without looking at him, attention totally focused on her laptop.

Pierce wanted to sigh, but didn’t. She was absolutely right to stay on the business of the morning.

“We’re going to meet with General MacBride and Colonel Perry and their adjuncts. And then we might be kicked upstairs. They are drawing up an OPLAN, an—”

“Operations Plan, yes I know,” she replied. And he was reminded she’d worked in security for a year at the NSA.

“I think it is going to take a concerted effort across the board, both in the Pentagon and in Congress.”

She looked up at that. “So we’re going to do this dog-and-pony show a couple of times?”

“Over and over. Sorry.”

She sighed. “No. If that’s what it takes. And we’re fighting against an accepted narrative, which is also hard. But it’s a narrative that can lead to war and is definitely worth combating.”

Pierce took her hand and brought it to his mouth. “And we’re going to do this while keeping you safe.”

She gave a faint smile. “Easier said than done.”

“Nope.”

Pierce turned his head and looked her right into the eyes, those remarkable pale eyes, so intelligent and sad. He was not going to lose her.

Though they were in danger, he felt that something was starting, something big. He could try to keep his head out of his pants, but he couldn’t keep it out of his heart.

This morning hadn’t been just some sex to let off steam. He’d felt a connection he’d never felt before, some kind of flow, some kind of woo-woo thing he’d never believed in, even though his buddy Raul said the instant he saw Emma he ‘knew’.
